Natural Treatment of Depression
Besides conventional treatment with psychotherapy and antidepressants became very popular also alternative treatment of depression with natural remedies including healthy diet, regular exercise and stress management. Although seriousness of depression should not be undermined and usually requires professional help milder forms can be also treated with alternative remedies and therapies which can be also used as a complement to the conventional treatment to improve its efficiency and to achieve faster results. However, before choosing alternative treatment of depression is important to consult with a professional medical practitioner especially if taking antidepressants or any other medications.
One of the most popular natural remedies for treatment of depression is St John's wort extract which is available over-the-counter in form of a tablet, capsule, tincture or teabag. Helpful against depression may be also wild oat and ginseng teas, and aromatherapy with chamomile, lavender, rose, bergamot, jasmine, lemon balm and ylang ylang essential oils.
Since healthy diet and regular exercise are very important for general health and well-being it can do any harm if including in the diet some foods which are important for healthy chemical balance in the brain and avoiding foods that make depression even worse such as alcohol and caffeine. If suffering from depression is very important to control the desire after certain foods such as sweets, and to spoil oneself with chocolate and ice cream only occasionally. Either way, all who suffer from depression should eat foods rich with minerals such as zinc and magnesium, vitamins B6 and C, folic acid and inositol. Regular exercise will help to forget about negative thoughts and feelings by attracting attention to the activity. However, if the main purpose of exercise is to forget negative thoughts perhaps is better to choose activity or sport that requires full concentration instead of activities that still enable to think on other things. However, if condition does not improve within few days or if it is affecting abilities to work, relations with other people and if having sleeping difficulties is necessary to seek professional help.
